As I started on my spiritual journey, the idea of guides did not really resonate with me at the beginning.
Friends were encouraging me to connect with animal guides, earth guides. I tried to but was not getting much intuitive downloads in that direction. I couldn’t really “speak” to animals (not yet perhaps?)
Another friend introduced me to Angels/Archangels. I connected with Angels or the idea of Angels better, but I felt their energy was too strong for a newbie like me. And I didn’t quite know how to handle that sort of intensity.
That was when I started to look at developing stronger relationships with other guides.
That was when I started to get curious – how do you know who makes the right spiritual guide for you? How do you even begin to find out what guides are out there – is there a list?
How to choose the “right” spiritual guide?
#1 Get to know what entities resonate with you
If you are very new to this, you can google “spirit guides” and see what comes up.
You could get hints from your personal lives too. What do you gravitate towards? Greek mythology? Ancient Egyptian history? Animals? Plants? Elements?
Do you feel a pull towards Archangels? Do certain cultures, practices, Gods/Goddesses attract you?
The ones that resonate with you or that you are more attracted to are great candidates for guides!
#2 Choose one which has an energy that you are trying to embody
You may be looking to bring in the energy of abundance into your life, for instance. In this case, Hindu Goddess Lakshmi may resonate. She’s the Goddess of financials, wealth, abundance and beauty.
Perhaps, you are looking for a more divine masculine/feminine energy in your life. Whatever it is that you are needing in your life, there is a spirit guide that can help you with it.
Get on Google again and get to know some of the spiritual representations of these energies – the deities, Gods, Goddesses etc. Really feel into their energy.
Which ones strikes a stronger energetic chord with you?

#3 Which areas of your life do you need help in?
There are guides for any area of life that you can think of!
For instance, when I needed help with managing my time, I connected with Thoth – the Ancient Egyptian God of time, writing and the Akashic records.
When I wanted to work on self-love, I turned to Aphrodite.
When I was craving the can-do, fiery, masculine energy, I turned to Sekhmet. She’s one of my fav guides by the way!
So have a think about the areas of your life that you may want to work on. Then, seek out and connect with the guides that are “in charge” of those areas.
#4 Meditate and see who makes their presence known
When you still aren’t sure who is the right guide for you, meditate and ask “who should I work with?” and then see who makes their presence known.
I did this recently when I was looking for a guide who could help me balance my divine masculine and feminine energy and Mary Magdalene came through. She had been knocking on my spiritual door for awhile already and I let her in!
Spirit guides may appear in your mind or you may keep seeing them pop up randomly in different places – on TV, books, Youtube videos, social media etc.
Pay attention – it could be your guides trying to connect and make their presence known.

How to connect with your guides?
Once you’ve found your spirit guides, it’s important to keep up a practice of consistently connecting with them.
#1 Write open letters
This is one of the most effective ways of connecting with them and letting guides flow through you. I write letters to Sekhmet and Mary Magdalene, sometimes Thoth pretty often. I just like seeing my thought process and their responses laid out in the open and will revisit them in the future.
The things I talk about? My day. My problems. My wishes. I’d tell them I have an issue and write to them for help, call them in when I’m finding life challenging.
Before each letter-writing session, I’d meditate on my guide, or play some meditation music in the background whilst I call them in. I quiet my mind then I will start writing. It’s a pretty amazing feeling as you feel your guide take over as you are writing.
I’ve gotten some amazing thoughts and solutions from these letter-writing sessions. So give it a shot!
#2 Talk to them daily
Ask for help! Call your guides in and talk them as if they are friends. Our guides are always really wanting to speak to us, if only we let them in! Speak to them in your mind, call them in and just have random conversations with them several times a day. It’s pretty fun!

#3 Give thanks
Something that I see with many people – the tendency to take their guides for granted. They just look for their guides when they have an issue, and once they get their help, they just ignore them. Don’t do that!
Your guides are not Aunt Agony or your servant at your beck and call. You cannot keep taking from them but never giving thanks at all. Express your gratitude and give thanks frequently. Talk to them whether you need help or not.
Gratitude is a bit part of spiritual work, it helps you manifest, brings in abundance and kindness and light into your life. It is also a great daily habit to cultivate.
If you are inclined, you could even have an altar table with offerings – flowers, candles, oils, photos of your guides etc. Whatever you feel helps you give thanks to your guides in a tangible, meaningful way.
#4 Meditate
This is one of the quickest ways to connect with your guides – by inviting them into your subconscious. There are specific meditations that cater to specific guides, but not all of these are so readily available.
Meditations are the fastest way to connect with a guide and even a 5-minute guided meditation is useful. You can find these meditations on YouTube and on various other platforms!
