It’s that time of the year again. December.
When we all wanna just cosy up under the covers, Toffee Nut Latte in hand, book in the other. Or perhaps you are just content watching the snow falling lightly outside your window, reflecting back on the year gone by.
And when it comes to year end and the fresh start to a new year, I always start thinking about my New Year’s Resolutions. I know that many of us balk at our resolutions because we always seem to start off enthusiastically and this enthusiasm tapers off and we lose steam.
But really, New Year’s Resolutions are all down to how good are we at keeping it up. It speaks to our habits, and the way in which we start and sustain a new habit.

So back to our example of losing weight. Say, you’ve set a goal of losing 15kg in the new year, and you’ve outlined a diet and exercise plan to go along with it. This is all great and in the first few days you are really excited. You go grocery shopping, you go for your runs and then something happens.
You find yourself skipping a day or two. Two days become four and then it stretches into weeks. Soon you have completely lost the motivation to lose weight.
This sort of thing happens because we haven’t quite understood how our mind and body reacts to an introduction of a completely new activity or system into your life. It isn’t automated yet, so you have to use a greater conscious effort to make them happen.
There are plenty of ways you can get around this!
You could possibly design your environment in such a way that makes it less effortful for you to carry out your new diet and exercise routine.
You could make use of the tiny habit hack, building on each habit, one tiny step at a time.
You could seek out an accountability partner.
I talk about all these habit hacks and more in this episode of the Life As An Experiment podcast!
So if you are looking to lose weight, or start a new habit or routine in the New Year, do tune in!
