When I was starting to work on my own self-healing and had a spiritual mentor, she told me “the material plane is actually harder to master when you are already in a spiritual place”.
That sounded incredulous to me. I’ve always not what I would call a spiritual person til I had my “eye” open in the years leading up to Covid, but had always dabbled n astrology and tarot. I’ve always assumed that for humans, the physical and material plane was easier to “master” as we are existing in this plane currently.
It was only when I started working on my lower chakras that I understood what she meant. Gosh were the lower chakras hard to unblock! We have so much of insecurities, fears and emotional wounding!
The Root Chakra in particular, is our link tro the physical world, to the earth. It is the foundation upon which our entire existence is built. When the root chakra is in harmony, we feel grounded, confident, and ready to face the challenges of the physical plane.
However, when this chakra is blocked or imbalanced, we may experience feelings of anxiety, fear, and insecurity, making it difficult to navigate the complexities of life on Earth.
Are you healing your root chakra and becoming more abundant in life? Find out in the quiz below!
Money: The challenge of the physical and material realm
And nothing is more complex than money – which brings up so much of fears, anxieties, negative beliefs and so many stories.
Living in a consumerist, capitalistic society that is so focused on performative acts of status and wealth is not actually a sign of a healthy root chakra, quite the reverse. Many wealthy people and those who love posing on social media for others’ consumption and envy are mostly unhappy with the state of their wealth.
There’s always a yearning to be richer, money is never enough. That’s where all the problems with the root chakra come in.
Challenges of an Imbalanced Root Chakra
An imbalanced root chakra can manifest in various ways, hindering our ability to thrive in the physical realm. Feelings of fear, insecurity, and instability can make it difficult to make decisions, take risks, and pursue our passions. We may struggle to form healthy relationships, experience financial difficulties, and feel disconnected from our purpose in life.
But taking it into the material realm – an imbalanced root chakra always shows up in our attitudes and beliefs towards wealth and our behaviours towards money.
We might hoard money, underspend, overspend, overindulge, have no concept of savings etc.
For the longest time, I was a chronic underspender. Every bit of money going out meant there was lesser in the bank account left over. I would scrimp on food, necessities but had unusual spending habits and would splurge on the weirdest things, like spending close to 1K to change the dates of a flight that wasn’t even important.
Priorities, all wrong.
I’ve long held negative stories towards money and wealth and felt like I didn’t “deserve” to be rich, that life was supposed to be hard and money was hard to come by.
If you hold negative beliefs and stories around money, just like me, then you may have had a complex, tricky relationship with money too.
So how do you begin to change that?
Nurturing your relationship to the Root Chakra
The key to building a healthy relationship with money, your material possessions and the physical plane is to learn how to restore balance to your root chakra. Here are 2 ways you can begin strengthening this vital energy centre:
Affirming your sense of safety
I used to never believe in affirmations but it’s one of the bestand easiest ways to shift your beliefs and raise your vibration.
When healing your root chakra, repeat positive affirmations that reinforce your sense of security and worthiness. Statements like “I am grounded,” “I am safe,” and “I am worthy” can help to reaffirm that you have everything you need.
Money fears always stem from the “what ifs” – what if I’m worthy of wealth, what if I run out of money someday etc and it’s time to flip that script around. Try it today! Repeat it often to yourself and see your life shift.
Seeking support.. from the right people
We live in a world where people are becoming increasingly socially isoalted and have little idea how to connect with others. Right now is the time where you need the support of others, particularly as you work through your root chakra.
Your loved ones and friends can provide emotional guidance and timely reminders whenever you find yourself slipping into your previous unhealthy habits. They can also provide the encouragement you need on your journey.
However, be mindful of who you are seeking support from. Some people do not have your best intentions at heart and can further drain your chakra energy and drag you back into an unhealthy place.
I’ve had to stop hanging out with friends who were constantly splurging on nights out as if they had access to a fountain of wealth somewhere. It was creating alot of resentment in me and not helping me with my money journey.
