The sacral chakra has always fascinated me – it is an area which governs alot of our emotions, feminine energy and creativity. It is where our life-force is (as it’s the area where our reproductive organs lie) and in my work with many female clients in particular, I’ve observed a correlation between repressing very heavy emotions – sadness, resentment and anger – and some trauma to the womb. This comes in the form of fibroid growth, removal of the womb, menstruation issues and other related issues.
Intergenerational trauma and women’s voices
I do have a theory that in particular for women, we have been repressed for centuries as a group – our voices and rights have been controlled by the patriarchy and so many other societal entrapments for so many years. It’s only in recent years that we have started to slowly – but surely – been allowed a voice.
But there’s still much work to do. As a result, alot of women carry alot of intergenerational trauma, as well as beliefs and practices that are still perpetuated by individual cultures. For instance, women are still expected and socialised to be the main caretaker in our families – despite our participation in the modern workforce.
There’s alot of resentment, disappointment, sadness and alot of repressing our own needs – all these are heavy topics that will take some time to unpack, probably many years more, but we have been making huge strides in that direction.
The thing about a blocked or repressed sacral chakra is that together root and solar plexus chakras, as a lower chakra centre, it forms the base for our energy flow to other parts of the body and especially to the higher chakras. When much of our energy is stuck at the lower chakras, we can often feel negative and “dragged down”. We may be able to achieve different things in life but there will always be this feeling of some unconscious resistance that is holding us back. That “held-back” energy has to do with the unresolved blocks in our lower chakras.
And what can we do then, to heal the sacral chakra and unblock the energy in that area?
#1 Face your traumas
Trauma can come in various forms, and come in a range, from bullying to childhood abuse. All children have experienced some form of hurt or a traumatic experience. And we can unconsciously carry it into adulthood, which will then affect whatever we are trying to accomplish then.
Facing your traumas can be tough, I know. I’ve been there. It’s much needed work though and you will see your world shift after that. There is alot of professional help out there, coaches, therapy and it helps to take the time to find out who will be a good match for your needs.
#2 Do Inner Child work
The inner child energy is very strongly tied to our sacral chakras – not only because it is where new life is birthed, but because alot of the creative energies of the sacral chakra is tied into the child-like wonder and joys that accompany creative pursuits and pleasurable activities.
Much of the blocks and resistance we experience in our adulthood is tied into the stories that we have been telling ourselves, or the experiences we went through as kids. It helps to unpack some of these stories and to heal some of the hurt our inner child is still carrying around.
A great book for doing inner child work is The Child in You by Stefanie Stahl. I started with her book when I was doing my own inner child work and it helped me understand myself alot.
#3 Change your stories and release your patterns
Alot of what I teach in my work with others is how our stories, beliefs and patterns can shape our emotions, thoughts and our life. If we were to change our stories, and shift our patterns, we will be able to heal the hurt that we have been carrying in our bodies, and have buried in our sacral chakras.
How do we start doing that? We start by questioning what we have been doing all these time and how it is preventing us from getting where we want to. For example, I used to have a fear of public speaking. I had to take the time to unpack the fears around this, the story I was telling myself was – that I wasn’t good at it and would make a mess of myself on stage.
It was important to rewrite that story and rewire the beliefs I had around public speaking.
