Work Smarter, Not Harder: study tips psychology taught me

  • study in shorter intervals and take breaks (ie, 40 minutes studying and 20 minutes break)
  • during your break don’t watch tv or surf the internet. get outside if you can and go for a walk. or at least listen to some instrumental music and walk around your hall. or meditate or do some art. anything that doesn’t require super directed attention. this allows your attention to be replenished. it’s like a muscle and you gotta give it time to rest. tv doesn’t allow for that.
  • relate the information to yourself and your life. creating visual images will improve your memory.
  • when studying, take notes by hand and put them in your own words. generating material yourself will encode the material better in your brain, and you’ll remember it better
  • don’t just reread, rehearse! quiz yourself on the materials. if you use a visual image “memory palace” technique, walk yourself through it. you’re likely to remember information you’ve tested yourself on better.
  • organizing information into groups that make sense create more connections in your brain and allow you to remember things better. the more meaningful connections you make, the better.
  • make sure the last thing you do before bed is study. no phone, no netflix. your brain will process what you’ve just done while you sleep and this improve recall.

So here are the tips:

    1. Before you start making a summary, you should consider if it is a good idea to summarise the course. Not every subject and not every book is ideal to summarize. For example, if your book contains a lot of details and you know there are going to be a lot of detailed questions on your exam, it is a smarter idea to just start studying instead of making a whole summary.

 

    1. I always use the first page of the notebook that I use for writing my summary to write down all the important things the professor says about the exam, what the exam is going to look like, to make a content table for my summary and other important things. This is something really useful because when it’s time to start studying you’ll have a page with all the important things you need to know about the exam.

 

    1. Use a color coding system that works for you. I personally don’t like to use a lot of colors in my notes and summary. That’s why I use a fineliner for titles and articles and a highlighter for all the definitions.

 

    1. Make sure your summary is very clear, so you have a good overview. I like to use bullet points and I make sure that in every bullet point, there is something important, a main idea.

 

    1. While you are summarizing, keep the content table open next to you. If you do this, you’ll keep seeing the bigger picture and you will also see everything important.

 

    1. My next tip is to don’t use highlighters until you have written a whole page or until you have finished a paragraph. After that, highlight all the important things. This way, you are forcing yourself to read the summary so you will remember it a lot better. It’s also helpful to see if you still understand what you wrote down.

 

    1. Make sure you have read the book at least once before summarizing. If you do this, you will understand everything a lot better while summarizing and it will make sure you summarise a lot quicker, because you already have an idea on what’s important and what isn’t.

 

    1. If you have trouble with finding the most important things in your books this tip might help you. In every paragraph, there is a main point or a main idea. There is something in there that is the most important thing you need to study and understand for the exam. A lot of the times, it’s the first or last sentence of the paragraph. Try to look for the main point/idea in every paragraph.

 

  1. My last tip is to read your summary on a regular basis. Making a summary is going to help you remember a lot of the information and understand it, but making a summary doesn’t necessarily mean that you studied everything. Make the summary, read it often and study it to be fully prepared for your exam.

The Feynman Technique

The Feynman Technique:

Step 1: Write the name of the concept at the piece of the paper (ideally you’d already have studied this concept well enough and have gathered a good enough idea on it from books, lectures etc)

Step 2: Explain that theory in as simple and straightforward a way as possible. Imagine takling to a 5 year old (you can’t use too complex words). Keep asking yourself “why” (just like kids would) at various points in this process. If you don’t want to come across sounding too simplistic and patronizing, imagine explaining it to your grandparents

Step 3: Identify knowledge gaps. If you find yourself stumped along the way or unable to explain it simply, be it a point or an equation, go back to your notes, references and books and re-learn/study all those bits again.

Step 4: Use analogies and stories to explain it if you can.

Studying tips

As someone who really struggles to concentrate and study due to anxiety, I thought it may be useful to share some of my studying strategies/tips on here in hope they might help someone else!

-Study away from home. It’ll allow you to relax better when you sleep and therefore your body and mind will be more prepared for the next day.

-Give yourself breaks. It’s pointless trying to do hours of revision straight as you’re not going to absorb everything as best as you can. Give yourself 10 minute breaks every 50 minutes, and then carry on. I use chrome extensions with timers and won’t allow myself to touch my phone until the timer has run out.

-Use pretty notebooks and colourful stationary. It will motivate you to study more and the results of your revision will be more satisfying, making it more likely that you will read back over your notes.

-Eat well and make sure you get sufficient nutrients. People often neglect their health during exam period, but a healthy diet is important as a healthy diet will ensure you feel as energised and well as possible. The last thing you want is to feel ill during exam season.

-Give yourself something to look forwards to when exams finish. Book yourself in for a spa treatment. Plan a lil day trip. Find a book you want to read. A place you want to visit. Having something to look forwards to will help you power through.

-Have a relaxing and happy study playlist. It’ll allow you to stay calm when struggling to understand and learn concepts. Music influences our emotions a lot more than people realise, and emotions affect our studies.

-Don’t study all day every day! You need evenings off. The last thing you want to happen is to ‘burn out’ and end up lacking motivation. Watch a film before you go to sleep. Spend an evening with a friend. Relax.

-Try not to stress. Exams are not the be all and end all. The most important thing is that you’re happy. If you fail an exam, so what? You can still resist. You can still complete your degree. School and university isn’t everything. You’re only going to lead a happy and fulfilling life if you’re happy yourself, so don’t fret.

A little reflection on a REALLY productive day

Things that I did:

  1. Came in early to work and felt fresh
  2. Started work pretty quickly. Probably 15 mins after settling down, I willed myself to open the appropriate folder and just get down to business.
  3. *You get more of what you do. If you’re mindlessly surfing the net, you’d have absolutely no willpower to want to get up and get to work. But if you start doing just a bit of work, even if it’s just opening the document and not doing anything, the momentum will eventually carry you through. And before you know it, you’ve finished something big. And you’d just want to carry on and do more things.
  4. Used a sort-of timer. Kept track via the clock but would have preferably used the Pomodoro method. And also tracked my alloted times for each tasks more accurately as well as what I could have been distracted by during those times
  5. Wrote a to-do list the night before and stuck to it
  6. Wrote down everything I needed to do besides work. Calls i need to make, emails/msgs I needed to reply so that all my to-dos big and small were out of my head and onto the paper
  7. *Had a piece of rough paper beside me as sort of a brain dump so I could free my mind up. Used it as a distractions tracker as well; with the timings and what I was distracted by at those times. Funny, after i listed everything down, i wasn’t interested in engaging in them anymore.
  8. Going through all my tasks without caring how I felt/thought about it. Just mechanically went down the to-do list if you will.
  9. Whenever I had a break, I timed those and once they were over, I did not linger on whatever I was doing (be it watching a movie, checking out IG etc). I immediately switched my attention and started work quickly.
  10. If the piece of work was too long/draggy/needed alot of thinking, I felt a lot of resistance and hence, broke it up into a few parts; taking breaks in between.
  11. Huge projects for the entire week/month. broke it down for each day and just focused on what I needed for the day without thinking about what was going on tomorrow or Friday etc. Be present and focus (this point was inspired by a video I watched on ‘Getting Things Done’)

Another REALLY productive day today (5th Dec, Monday) and the things I did on top of some of the things in the list above:

  1. Using a Timer helps. I timed myself in blocks of 25 mins and sometimes I was so into the momentum of things I just didn’t want to stop.
    1. Also, timing my breaks in between those working blocks/lunch made sure I re-focused on whatever I needed to do quickly and also pulled me back from whatever I distracted with. You know how easy it is to just check IG for 5 mins and end up on there for 15. For me, I tend to drag out my lunches. But eating quickly (and focusing on my food/not multi-tasking) and timing my lunch helped me. Not everyone will feel comfortable with timing everything including their breaks. But for someone who gets easily distracted/is very poor with time management, this has helped me a ton.
  2. I needed to write an executive summary for a very long report, and had been sitting on it/reluctant to start. So I tried to get into it but first, pulling up all my docs and got started by writing up the section headers according to the original report. I then just automatically carried on reading and inputting stuff. Before I knew it, I was in the “groove”. I just put in whatever I though tof at that moment and told myself that I could change things later (this is to prevent the perfectionist thing that always creeps in on me). The point is just to get the momentum going and get something out.
  3. Little to no distractions. I had to close the office door so I wasn’t also caring about what went on outside/who walked past.
  4. Also, music. I can’t work in complete silence and always need some sort of noise to keep me going. I used to plug in my headphones and would play songs (not playlists) on YouTube. These were usually songs that I know as well, so that made me very distracted as I would sing along/get in the “mood”. Also, individual songs didn’t work as I would be so distracted looking for new songs to listen to once the one I’m listening to ends.
    1. So what I did? I played Christmas Carol playlists (it’s Christmas season yo!) in the background, streamed them spotify. Loud enough to provide stimulation but not too loud that it was distracting/people who walk by will think I’m slacking off at my desk.
  5. Also a good lunch really helps. I had a very yummy and healthy (and cheap!) meal with lots of greens/fibre/veggies, brown rice (fist-size or less) and I was not sleepy after that. More of the same the next few weeks!
  6. Breaks. I took breaks often and what I learnt was that, It’s BAD to go on social media/random sites during those breaks. They not only made me more exhausted (i could literally feel my brain feeling tired after reading the content), but they didn’t make me or my mind feel “rested”. Instead – stand up, walk around, go grab a healthy drink (water for me) and just get a change of scenery. even for 5 mins. Clear your desk, talk to someone, listen to nice chill music, listen to podcast, watch a short movie clip. Whatever is great. Do anything but go on social media. Not only does it not make you feel rested, but before you know it, you’re down a rabbit hole and could have easily spent an hour of your time on instagram or facebook or whatever. That’s one hour of your life wasted that could have been spent doing something productive.
  7. Having broad monthly goals but taking the time to think through them and breaking them down realistically into weekly goals and then daily goals. This makes it less daunting. I used to worry so much about plans changing and so whatever I plan initially will not be useful etc – discard those sorts of you think like that too. Plans aren’t meant to be 100% concrete (my perfectionist issue again!), they are meant to be followed but can also be changed to make way for new things/situations. Life is pretty unpredictable after all.
